😃You may have seen our exciting announcement ye 😃You may have seen our exciting announcement yesterday that Dr Sabrina Cohen-Hatton has joined our team of Ambassadors as well as a very important role of 'Expert by Experience'

🐾But who is Sabrina?

Sabrina left home at the age of 15 and school at 16 and experienced times of extreme personal adversity including a period of homelessness with her beloved dog Menace before embarking on a career as a firefighter. Dr Sabrina now holds the highest rank in the UK for a firefighter- Chief Fire Officer.

Her story has received international interest and her first book, The Heat of the Moment, has been published in three languages.

Co-Founder Jade asked Sabrina what barriers she experienced when she was living on the streets with Menace:

'there were no temporary accommodation options available to me because I had a dog. At the time, Menace was my only source of stability and companionship. His needs always came before mine, so the idea of bettering my own situation at the expense of caring for him was absolutely out of the question. If I couldn't take him with me, I simply went without accessing those services. In all of my time experiencing homelessness, I only spent one night in a hostel because they allowed Menace in with me. '

We're absolutely honoured to have Sabrina on board with StreetVet 👏

If you suspect heatstroke, seek veterinary care im If you suspect heatstroke, seek veterinary care immediately!

Begin to lower their body temperature right away, to increase the chance of survival. This must be done gradually, to avoid causing shock (which can also be fatal).

Try these cooling methods:
• Gently pour cool water over them
• They may like to lick an ice cube, but do not force it on them
• Move them somewhere shaded and cool, preferably with air conditioning or a fan
• Lay them on a cooling surface: cool mat, wet towel, cool metal table
• Provide a constant supply of cool water, but do not force them to drink
• If using wet towels, make sure you replenish them with cool water
• Do NOT put them directly into cold water, and do NOT use very cold/icey water, as this could result in shock

Even if you believe the heatstroke has passed, there may be unseen medical issues, which a vet will check for.

Cool mats are great when out in hot weather! The Cool mats are great when out in hot weather!

The liquid inside absorbs heat from your dog’s body, and “recharges” when it's not being used. No worries about it running out of cooling power!

Be safe and enjoy the summer! 🐾 Be aware of th Be safe and enjoy the summer! 🐾

Be aware of the activities you engage you dog in during hot weather. As much as their puppy-dog eyes are pleading with you to play, it may be best to avoid excessive exercise and reduce the risk of them overheating.

To avoid the hottest time of the day, exercise your dog in the morning or evening. Make sure you can supply regular shade and water, and remember that your dog’s paw pads are sensitive to hot surfaces like tarmac and sand.

A great hot-weather walk would be shady woodland, especially if there’s a stream for your dog to paddle in and keep cool. There are also games you can play that require less running and can be done indoors, like hide and seek.
