Lady G Case Study

At Davies, Lady Guinevere’s neurological examination revealed a non-ambulatory tetraparesis (profound neurological weakness in all four limbs). She also had evidence of arthritis affecting multiple joints. The team suspected an inflammatory condition and were able to localise the neurological issue to her brainstem, part of the central nervous system.

In order to determine a suitable treatment plan and the likely prognosis for Lady Guinevere an MRI scan was performed.  The MRI showed lesions of apparent inflammation affecting specific regions in the brainstem and thankfully no brain tumours were found. A sample of cerebrospinal fluid was collected which contained abnormally high numbers of lymphocytes (a type of white blood cell). Lady Guinevere was diagnosed with meningoencephalitis a sterile inflammation of the brain that is thought to be immune-mediated.
